Full Description

{2} The earliest layer in trial pit 7 consisted of a thick brown silty depost with limestone and charred inclusions. Two 12th century sherds were recovered from this layer. A single course of large roughly hewn limestone blocks running roughly WNW-ESE overlay this layer. A thin sandy soil had accumulated against these blocks and contained glazed pottery, ceramic tile and burnt slate tile indicating a late post medieval date.
The lower layer containing medieval pottery may be an occupation soil associated with earlier buildings. The overlying wall probably relates to the later buildings shown running across the site on the 1839 Enclosure Award map.
