Summary

An archaeological watching brief undertaken during the excavation of a lift shaft identified a stone-lined well. The date of construction of the well is unknown but the pottery evidence from the backfill suggests it was filled in the mid 19th century.

Full Description

{1} An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during various phases of intrusive works at the Guildhall Road site. The excavation of a crane base and piling cage identified disturbed deposits and redeposited natural ironstone. Within the lift shaft were the remains of a stone-lined well. The date of construction of the well is unknown but the pottery evidence from the backfill suggests it was filled in the mid 19th century.
