Monument record 5003/3/1 - Undated wall and possible gate pier, Delapre

Ironstone wall foundation identified in a cable trench. Further brick foundations were observed elsewhere in the trench. {1} An archaeological watching was undertaken during trenching to replace overhead cables. An ironstone foundation was exposed. On an alignment of north west to south east the large ironstone blocks covered a smaller brick wall, two bricks thick and on the same alignment. It was unclear whether the ironstone blocks were part of the original foundation or if they were placed on top of the brickwork. To the south west was a large ironstone block, roughly square, 0.56m long. It is believed, from its location, that it could have been footings or the discarded remains of original gate posts. Under the current road surfaces lay thick layers of building material showing post medieval disturbance. Post medieval brick structures were also visible throughout the site.
