{4} Archaeological investigation of the former Amalgamated Tyres site at the south end of Fetter Street identified a large medieval quarry pit, as well as several more pits and shallow gullies probably dating from the mid 13th century and into the 14th. The paucity of finds from the features suggests that the site the excavated area had never lain directly behind a medieval St John’s Street frontage.

At the southern end of the excavated area were the ironstone foundations and cellar which belonged to one of a row of short-lived houses built in the early 20th century and destroyed for the building of the former Amalgamated Tyres building in the 1930s.
