SNN111286 - Archaeological excavations at the former Amalgamated Tyres site, St John’s Street, Northampton

Following an archaeological Desk-Based Assessment and subsequent Field Evaluation, wider excavation recorded a small area of preserved medieval archaeology, restricted on all sides by more recent disturbance. Beneath deep homogenous garden soils contiguous with the evaluation trench were pits and gullies which lay as back-yard features cut into natural geology. There had been some medieval quarrying. The site and comparison with its neighbour indicates a very varied, discontinuous frontage to the medieval St John’s Street, which originally linked the existing Bridge Street and Cow Lane.
