Full Description
{1} After this sequence of houses the close remained empty until Rectory Farm was built in the early 17th century.
This was a two-storey stone building with later barns at each end, and was demolished just before 1968.
{5} Rectory farmhouse had been built in the middle of the medieval croft 4287/3 shortly after 1610 and was demolished in 1959. Photo of a sculpture of a civilian, c.1350, reused as a window mullion in Rectory farm.
{7} After the construction of the rectory in c.1600—1610, the excavated area of the croft became a garden. Paths, field drains and boundary walls of the 19th century were found, together with a rubbish pit of c.1870. The rectory ruins were surveyed and photographs of its appearance before demolition were traced.
{8} Rectory Farm was stone-built, roughly coursed, with fine stone quoins, gables and chimneys; its windows were ovolo-moulded and one doorway was of good quality stone. Built in about 1560.
{9} Recorded in 1979 prior to demolition. Suggests a 17th century date for the house (but only the NW end is of that date; the SE part rebuilt in the 18th century). NE front has ovolo-moulded stone mullion 2-light window at the NW end on the first floor.
