Full Description

{1} Magnetic anomalies which may be associated with medieval earthworks, house platforms or enclosures and distinct linear features indicative of potential archaeology, possibly associated with medieval settlement features.

{3} Archaeological trial trench excavation identified a zone of probable late Saxon-medieval settlement comprising enclosures, houses platforms and other settlement features, dating to the 10th-13th centuries. A single Roman ditch was also identified.

{4} Archaeological excavation was undertaken of Area A. The earliest feature was a palaeochannel which probably represents a former course of Raunds Brook. During the late Saxon period an enclosure was constructed with internal subdivisions and evidence for associated activity in the form of pits. In the Saxo-Norman period, the rectilinear enclosure system was expanded and at least two post-built structures were identified. Along the south edge of the excavation, close to Raunds Brook, a series of water management features were present. Subsequently, there was a major expansion of the settlement with the construction of twelve stone buildings adjacent to a metalled trackway along with associated domestic enclosures. The buildings were demolished after only a short period of occupation. By the late medieval period only a low level of activity recorded included a drying oven close to the palaeochannel.
