Full Description

{1} Identified by South Northamptonshire Council as being a building of historic and/or architectural significance.

{2} A level 2 historic building survey was undertaken in advance of the proposed conversion of the outbuilding to residential use. The building recording and documentary research did not uncover any information to suggest a construction date. A very brief examination of The Firs itself suggests it may have 17th century origins, which provides the earliest possible date for the outbuilding. The site clearly originated as a pre enclosure village farm, the house itself may, for a time have been a house of some status as a number of occupants were listed as private residents rather than farmers. Structurally, the outbuilding has clearly undergone a number of episodes of repair, rebuilding
and a 19th century extension. There is evidence of reused timbers which are potentially mid 17th century in date being used for one of these phases of work. The building recording did not indicate the original use of the outbuilding, but in all likelihood it was used as a stables and wagon house with a granary over. It is possible that the easternmost bay was added as a carriage house with a separate tack room at a time when the house was of higher status
