Abstract/Summary

This document is an archaeological standing building survey of an outbuilding at 31 High Street, Harpole, Northamptonshire (NGR SP 69007 60822), commissioned from Archaeological Building Recording Services (ABRS) by Mr & Mrs Williams in advance of the proposed conversion of the outbuilding to residential use. The building recording and documentary research did not uncover any information to suggest a construction date; 31 High Street itself may have 17th century origins and originated as pre enclosure village farm, which suggests a possible date for the outbuilding. The house itself may, for a time have been a house of some status as a number of occupants were listed as private residents rather than farmers. The outbuilding has undergone a number of episodes of repair, rebuilding and a 19th century extension. There are reused timbers which are potentially mid 17th century in date. The building recording did not indicate the original use of the outbuilding, but in all likelihood it was a stables and wagon house with a granary over. The easternmost bay may have been added as a carriage house with a separate tack room at a time when the house was of higher status. The archive will be deposited with Northamptonshire County Council can be arranged under the Event Number ENN110431.
