Full Description

{1} Identified by South Northamptonshire Council as being a building of historic and/or architectural significance.

{2} Stags Head Inn until the mid 20th century, in the ownership of Phipps Brewery. Situated at the entrance to the town from the Towcester Road and its junction with Church Way, the outbuildings clearly provided accommodation for travellers.

This is a substantial building of stone and brick. The front range is of four bays. Two angled cross wings extend to become substantial barns at the rear of the property. The barns show no material evidence of a pre-1700 building date. The front range has been rebuilt and dated 1834.

The south wing ground floor has a moulded spine beam and ovolo moulded joists. They occupy a position immediately behind the front range and a staggered joint indicates that this part of the building pre-dates the front range. The ceiling has been truncated where the back wall of the front range crosses it. Form is very unusual for this area and may be reset from elsewhere.

The north wing attic space contains a number of re-used timbers, far older than the present structures including a shallow angled truss comprising two crossed curved blades. They are trenched as if for purlins, but in their present orientation this would not be functional.
