Full Description
{1} Roman Settlement (SP 750796), S. and S.E. of New Covert, in the E. of the parish, on Northampton Sand and Upper Lias Clay between 135 m. and 150 m. above OD. Air photographs (in NMR) show, very
indistinctly, a large area of cropmarks covering some 10 hectares. It is not possible to interpret the features clearly, not only because there are discrepancies between the available air photographs but also because there is extensive frost-wedging in to the area. The site appears to consist of a number of conjoined rectangular enclosures, possibly with a ditched trackways passing between them. From the S.W. part of the site (SP 748796) Roman pottery has been found. Saxon Settlement (?) (SP 750796), found on the Roman Settlement. Early Saxon pottery has been discovered.
{2} Unclassified cropmarks, possibly geological, seen on aerial photos NCCAP: SP7579/001-7.
{3} Roman pottery has been found at SP748796, together with some Saxon sherds.
