A school was present in Rothwell by the 15th century. Re-founded in 1582. The school was rebuilt in 1870. Now demolished.

Full Description

{1} Free Grammar School was dissolved in 1548; Owen Ragsdale then re-founded school possibly in 1582

{2} Elizabeth I made "free school" of ancient chapel situated in Rothwell called St Mary's.

{3} Certified as "Free School" in 2nd year of Edward VI.

{4} Endowment of chapel as free school; "decayed house" of master of Grammar School on site of St Mary's chapel; house also place of instruction; founded in 1535; augmented by Owen Ragsdale in 1585; rebuilt in 1870; from school plaque in custody of Jesus Hospital.

{6} 1684 - St Mary's Chapel Rothwell to be used as a free school. Chapel now the residence of the manor Endowment £30 per year. 20 boys taught.

{7} Free School. The 'Free School' or 'Grammar School' (formerly St Mary's Chapel).

{8} After the dissolution, the chapel of St. Mary formed part of the endowment of a Charity or Free School. Various deeds relating to the property owned by the school are in the records of the Jesus Hospital in Rothwell. In 1822 the former chapel was still the dwelling house of the schoolmaster. A plan of the area including the Charity School House exist for 1810, which fronted onto the market place to the east of the Chequer Inn. The Charity School was quite separate from the British School and the National School which also existed in Rothwell by 1849.

{10} Rebuilt with house for master / mistress 1870 at a cost of £1,100. Classroom added 1893 (£180). 400 children endowment at £30 a year.

{11} Classroom was added in 1902.
