Full Description

{1} Identified by South Northamptonshire Council as being a building of historic and/or architectural significance.

{3} The farm building showed evidence of changing function over time. The basic layout of the building suggests it was a cart shed, with a grain store above; this is a traditional farm building combination. This is evidenced by the division of the building into three bays on the ground floor with wide openings on the north-east side. However, features such as the use of bull-nosed bricks on the corners of the uprights on the north-east elevation, and the smoothed edges of the timber uprights supporting the ceiling imply use as a cattle shelter shed. This is also evidenced by the feed rack on the south-east side of the building. There is also evidence for a possible phase of rebuilding. The differentiation between the overfired bricks in the lower two-thirds of the south-east elevation and the bricks of the upper third is very noticeable. It is less noticeable on the other building elevations. This suggests that a phase of rebuilding may have occurred, however it may just have been a difference in the bricks that were supplied for the construction of the upper part of the building. Finally, this building contains some interesting features due to its setting on the Fermor-Hesketh estate. Features such as the heraldic emblems taken from the coat of-arms of the Fermor–Hesketh family, found on the drain hoppers are very elaborate and specific to this estate.
