{4} History
The former barn was built in the early -C19 and may have been in use for the former farmhouse to the north, since converted to Ivy Bank and Cottage, but is shown in a self-contained plot on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1884. Following planning approval in 1984, the barn was approved for conversion to a dwelling in March 1987 and the works were subsequently carried out: sections of the walls and the entire roof were reconstructed in an enlarged envelope, a first floor and stair inserted and an extension was built to the west. There have been other minor alterations and additions since then.
Details
A former barn of early-C19 date, converted to a dwelling and extended in the late-C20.
MATERIALS: constructed of coursed, squared ironstone with quoins and a late-C20 extension of
limestone. The roofs are covered in concrete tile.
PLAN: broadly on a north/south orientation, the former three bay barn has been extended to the south by two bays and has an inserted first floor and stair. There is a conservatory to the south end of the east elevation. The west side of the former barn is attached via a link to a single-storey east/west extension.
EXTERIOR: modern openings with concrete lintels have been inserted in the principal (east and west)
elevations and the former barn doors have been replaced. The wes t elevat ion has probably been rebuilt with a narrower depth wall than the east elevation. The former barn opening on the west side has been reinstated with a stone segmental-arched head. There are late-C20 canted bays to the east , west and south elevations. The north end has no openings and a stone plinth.
INTERIOR: there are no fittings or finishes of historic note and the roof structure is of late-C20
construction.
