Full Description
{1} Reservoirs were built to provide water either for canals or for domestic and industrial purposes. The Northamptonshire Heights proved ideal for the location of reservoirs and eventually five were built to feed the Grand Union Canal. Naseby Reservoir, situated on the infant River Avon, was constructed in 1821 but significantly enlarged by the raising of the dam in 1837. The canals and their reservoirs were nationalised in 1948 to become British Waterways. Water is drawn off the Naseby reservoir by means of tunnels, with concrete overflow slopes provided. Some boating still takes place at Naseby.
