Full Description
{1} Stone barn, visible on the 1st edition OS map. The barn measures 15.2m by 6.4m and 5.2m to wall plate (7.5m to ridge.) The walls are 0.5m thick and built in locally quarried limestone in squared and coursed random rubble wth dressed quoin blocks in alternate courses. Two doorways are located in the east and west long elevations. 20th century overhead sliding barn doors are fitted across the east opening but otherwise the barn is open to the elements.
It is likely that the inner door lintels have been replaced at some stage with salvaged machined timber which appear to have been taken from a queen post truss. These may have come from the original roof which appears to have been replaced during the 20th century.
Each wall has been capped with local bricks and it is thought that this coincided with the re-roofing.
A high level window opening is evident at each gable with dressed limestone voussoirs; these ar enow blocked with matching limestone. Three stone ventilation niches are evident at waist height internally on the east elevation with splayed dressed stone reveals, although these are blocked up externally.
The mostly earth floor is uneven. The only other distinguishing feature are occasional pockets in the external stonework where earlier structures may have been attached as suggested on the 1st edition OS map.
The barn is in a generally run down state with missing rainwater pipes, open doorways and much agricultural debris.
