Full Description
{1} Single storey stone building with a blue slate roof in grounds of Little Harrowden House. The building is of utilitarian design, but is constructed of regularly coursed ironstone. The building is divided into three areas with two entrances. To the north west of the building there is a single width plank door leading to an open space divided from the main building by a stone wall. To the south west there is a large wooden sliding door (across approximately 1/3 of the length of the barn). There is a brick wall immediately to the south of this entrance forming an additional division within the building. The building was presumably constructed for small scale agricultural / storage use and continues in this function today.
The roof of the building is of interest. The rafters and purlins of the roof have clearly been replaced, but the original A-frame remains. The roof trusses are of very crude construction and form an offset A-frame rising from two different wall heights (providing uneven eaves). The roof is clearly an example of a vernacular solution to a particular structural problem.
