Full Description

{1} House. Mid C18, altered late C19. Regular coursed ironstone with ashlar façade and slate and plain-tile roof. Originally 3-unit plan. 2 storeys with attic. Originally 4-window range, now 3-window range of late C19 four-light stone mullion windows with transoms set in C18 openings with flat arches and keyblocks. Part-glazed door to left of centre under flat arch head with keyblock and C20 hood. Moulded stone cornice and ashlar gable parapets and kneelers. 2 flat topped roof dormers. Brick and stone stacks at ends. C18 barn attached to right of main front now forms part of the house and has three C19 casements and an ashlar gable parapet to the right. Late C19 extensions to rear. Interior not inspected.

{3} Harrowden House barn / stable is a two storey ironstone building physically adjoined to Little Harrowden House. There is a date stone “ASR 1724” on the east gable of the building. The building is roofed in blue slate and there are three single casement windows with an internal splay on the south face (at ground floor level) and a single vent on the east gable. The building was clearly modified in the 19th century (probably changing from a barn to a stable at this date) with the insertion of a central red brick extension on the north face. The extension sits flush to the wall, but has a dormer roof. There is a wooden plank door with an 8-light fanlight above on the ground floor and a taking in door with 4-light fanlight above on the first floor. The interior walls of the building are lined with brick and there is a concrete floor. The ground floor of the building is divided into two with an open area to the east (used as a store room) and the area to the west is used as a playroom and has been incorporated into the main house. There is a staircase at the west end of the building leading to the first floor. The first floor is constructed on two levels with the lower level at the west end and access to the upper level by wooden steps. There is a red brick chimney on the west wall of the building. There is a wooden trap door immediately to the rear of the taking in door in the centre of the building. The door jamb of the taking in door has a moulded internal splay constructed of brick. There are no other internal features. The roof of the building has clearly been replaced, but the main trusses of the original roof survive and have been re-used to form part of the new roof. There are three ties linking the principle rafters of the original roof; one of these ties has clearly been inserted at a later date as it spans the full width of the new roof. Another has been adapted with the construction of additional struts to link to the new roof line.
