Full Description

{4} Two structures inspected in 2000- the only standing remains of Site Number 4. A temporary brick building, probably an annexe to the sick quarters and a Nissen hut, probably the ambulance garage and mortuary. The brick building was in good condition and the Nissen hut was in poor condition at the time of inspection.
{6-10} A Second World War Royal Air Force accommodation camp is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located within Bone Copse woodland and centred at SP 65413 42785, Site 4 (Sick Quarters) was one of 10 satellite RAF camps for military personnel serving at adjacent RAF Silverstone, an operational wartime military airfield. Aerial photographs taken in spring 1942 show the airfield under construction at that time and the camp had yet to be created. By 1943 the airfield was operational. Site 4 comprised a sentry box adjacent to a M&E plinth (a mechanical and electrical junction/transformer box) with an access road leading to a 16 bed sick quarters building with a connecting annex building. Nearby is a sergeants and orderlies accommodation hut, an ablutions and latrines block and an ambulance garage/mortuary building. By 1993, aerial photographs show that only the roadway, picket post (sentry box) and sick quarters annexe building are visible, along with a small section of the sick quarters building, the remaining buildings have been demolished by that time. Aerial photographs taken in 2018 suggests that Site 4 remained unchanged at that date, but by 2019, only the road and the sick quarters annexe building remain extant.
