{6-15} A Second World War Royal Air Force camp is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of Historic England’s North Buckinghamshire Aerial Investigation and Mapping project. Located within The Straights woodlands and centred at SP 66142 42361, Site 3 (Communal) was one of 10 satellite camps for military personnel serving at adjacent RAF Silverstone, an operational wartime military airfield. Aerial photographs taken in spring 1942 show the airfield under construction at that time. The camp had yet to be created. By 1943 the airfield was operational. Communal Site 3 comprised a sergeants mess, officers mess, the officer commanding’s quarters, airmens institute, ablution blocks and latrines, gymnasium and sports facilities, a barbers shop, storehouses, a 22,000 gallon emergency water supply tank, a brick and earth-bermed blast shelter, a fuel compound and transformer station, and a sentry post. Aerial photographs taken in 1963 suggest that most of the buildings have been demolished by that date. By 1973, the woodland has been felled and all of the remaining buildings and structures have been demolished, except for the road system, the stand by set house, the emergency water tank, and the Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) plinth, which acted as an electrical transformer/junction box. On aerial photographs taken in 2019, these features appear to remain extant. Recent remote sensing indicates that many rectangular concrete platforms laid for the camp buildings remain intact within the woodland
