Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Whistley Wood has a substantial outer ditch and bank, strongly implying that it was intended to act as a park. The protective banks are likely to have first been made in the 13th century and possibly earlier. Summary from record 9196/0/14: Earthwork ditch identified during rapid survey.

Full Description
{2} The wood has a very fine external rampart with an internal ditch, best preserved at the north-east, immediately south of the Forest Enterprise road entrance, and along the crooked southern boundary and at the far south-west. The bank is about 1m high nearly 6m wide. On the west, it is partly damaged by a track running in Shortgrove Wood. A ditch defines the northern boundary and has no rampart. There are no internal ramparts visible.
