Full Description

{1} History:
1086 Domesday survey records a mill at Bricstoc rendering 5 shillings
1631 The two manorial mills (presumably under one roof) were extensively repaired by Robert Beaver
1635 Robert Beaver extended his business by erecting a windmill near Corby Woods
1928 A steam engine seems to have been installed and continued in use at least until 1936
1940 By this time the occupier was listed only as corn dealer, not miller.
Shown on Bryant's 1827 map (but no on Eyre's 1779 map or the 1821 survey plan for OS.

{2} A water mill worth 5/- had been present in the manor in 1086. By 1440 it was let out to farm. In 1596 Richard Barton held the watermill and other land next to the mill dam, together with nine other tenements and three shops. In 1607 Simon Montagu held the watermill and by 1650 it is described as two corn mills under one roof with holmes and mill banks held at an annual rent of £20. In 1725 the Montagu family still held the mill though now as owners of the manor. The mill appears to have been rebuilt on a new site at some time between 1805 and the 1880s, with a new leet being dug across a former close on the south side of Mill Lane. This accords with the description of the present building as being of 18th or 19th century date.
