Monument record 8131/1 - First World War Zeppelin Decoy
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Zeppelin L34 passed overhead on 1st October 1916, coming under fire from two anti-aircraft guns which together with a searchlight, had been placed near Corby. There was no significant target in the area at this time; the guns operated as a defence decoy as Zeppelin commanders tended to drop bombs near them in the hope of hitting some worthwhile target.

Full Description
{1} Documentary reference to the passing of a Zeppelin L34 on 1 October 1916. The Zeppelin "came under fire from two anti-aircraft guns, which together with a searchlight had been placed near Corby. At that time there was no significant target in the area….." The guns operated as a defence decoy, "for it had been found that Zeppelin commanders tended to drop bombs near guns, in the hope of hitting some worthwhile target". Might this site be one of those LAA or HAA (re)used during WWII?
