Full Description

{5} The kitchen garden was uncovered by a major clearance operation as they were extremely overgrown. Many of the buildings had to be stripped of ivy and could not be approached because of trees and undergrowth. Some buildings had collapsed. By necessity some recording relied primarily upon written and photographic records rather than drawn. Eleven buildings were separately recorded within the kitchen garden. Plan.
Building (3), cucumber house with adjacent boiler house. [The latter may have been demolished.]
Specialist brick-built structure 9.9m x 3.1m and sunken by almost 1m. It comprised a single space with small integral boiler on its west end. The roof was formerly glazed on six cast iron trusses. More detail given with photograph and section drawing showing arrangement/function of cucumber houses.
