Monument record 6165 - Undefined Prehistoric to Late Iron Age Activity

Trial trench excavation found no evidence of prehistoric occupation in the immediate vicinity, although a silted up hollow contained a few sherds of Iron Age pottery and pieces of animal bone. An undated ditch was also identified

{1} Evidence for occupation of the immediate site was absent as there were no domestic features or extensive enclosure systems present. There was probably activity close to the site during the middle/late Iron Age, perhaps the C1st BC. Burnt stones, probably used for the heating of water and for cooking, were observed in association with a small quantity of pottery and animal bone at the base of a natural hollow that had accumulated sediment during the prehistoric period. The hollow was probably a silted up stream which had probably ceased to exist by the Roman period. A single undated ditch lay perpendicular to the stream and may have drained into it. It contained burnt stone so may have been peripheral to settlement of some antiquity.
