Full Description

{1} The eastern half of Field 2 was walked. It yielded seven sherds of Iron Age pottery, all within a metre or so of each other, at the edge of the field. A more significant cluster of Romano-British pottery was found around the centre of the cropmark area and in the south-western part of the survey area, both within and around the slade. The pottery scatter overlies only the southern part of the cropmark site. A Roman coin of Crispus (AD 317-326) was also recovered.
The scatter of early-middle Saxon pottery coincides broadly with the distribution of Romano-British material. The quantity of sherds is unlikely to derive solely from former manuring practices. Many of the individual pieces are large and one has possibly been decorated with an incised pattern.
A few sherds of slag were collected in the general area of the early middle Saxon pottery scatter, to the west of the cropmark site.
