Full Description
{1} Around the beginning of the C12th the original hall (HER No 1301/24) was levelled and replaced by a broader aisled hall. This was 16.0m long x 10.5m wide. The domestic range to the south was probably retained for a while, but at some stage it was levelled and replaced by a new, shorter range, which was 9.0m long x 4.8m wide. This abutted the south wall of the hall, although not squarely. The long walls were founded in narrow, steep-sided trenches. It appears to have been a single chamber and remnants of floor material were identified. In addition there was a separate building to the south-west, possibly a kitchen range.
The pottery assemblage associated with the aisled hall and the underlying hall of the long range provides a terminus post quem for construction of AD1100, and the more than 1200 sherds of pottery recovered from the aisled hall and associated deposits suggest that occupation continued through the 12th century.
