Full Description
{1} The north-east end of Trench 3 was flooded, however the west side of a ditch was visible in section and may be the edge of the C17th Civil War fortification known as The Great Ditch. Flooding prevented the investigation of the relationship between this ditch and the drainage gullies to the south-west.
The north-east end of Trench 4 was flooded, however the west side of a ditch was visible in section and may be a continuation of the edge of the Civil War Great Ditch observed within Trench 3.
An undated ditch was observed in plan within Test Pit 5, although its full extent lay outside the limit of investigation. The ditch is likely to be part of the C17th Civil War Great Ditch re-fortification of Towcester.
