Full Description

{1} The geotechnical test pits to the east of the motte, close to the millstream, indicated that beyond the motte ditch there had been extensive post medieval quarrying for sand and gravel, backfilled with a layer of peaty, organic silt. At a depth of 2.5m were recovered single sherds of manganese mottled ware (c.1680-1740) and a creamware colander (c.1720-1780), together with residual Roman samian ware.
