Full Description
{1} At a constant distance of 1.6m from the 1923 church extension lay an east-west aligned unbonded foundation of limestone. It was rough coursed and 300mm height survived proud of the formation level of the new extension. Thus its top was buried 400mm below the flat churchyard level at the point where it dipped to form a glacis or drainage bank. The exposed structure was removed by hand but contained no datable finds.
The un-mortared wall may relate to the creation of the former drainage bank, partly removed for the current works. This would have been created when the drainage gully was created around the foot of the church. As it skirts the 1923 works it must post-date these. The wall may have formed a temporary revetment for the workers putting in the gully, later covered over when the bank was smoothed out and seeded.
