Full Description
{1} The site was covered by a clearance layer in the late C1st/early C2nd, probably in preparation for re-use of the land. At the southern end of the excavated trench this layer was cut by a complex of shallow pits and a slot or gully. A further pit lay at the north end of the trench. The relationships between the pits had been disturbed by a modern pipe trench, a former telegraph post hole and an early medieval pit, but it is considered that they were all more or less contemporary. The pits contained a range of finds including pottery including Samian dated to 120-130 AD, roof tile, animal bone and frequent oyster shells. They are interpreted as early C2nd rubbish pits.
