Full Description

{1} In the C2nd AD a droveway east of the villa lead to a partially metalled ford over Harper's Brook.
At the south-east corner of the excavated area was a probable fording area approaching Harper’s Brook. A layer of material was laid down to form an area of hard-standing or metalling around the brook, which included rubble, pebbles, worked architectural stone and querns. The fording area is probably contemporary with the droveway, but due to its regular maintenance as a consequence of natural flooding the last phase of metalling overlay the droveway ditches.

{2} To the south the droveway ditches were overlain by a road aligned north-east to south-west. Both may have been in use at the same time and the droveway may have been used to channel livestock from areas to the north of the villa towards the road.
The road was up to 10m wide and comprised compacted yellow-orange sandy gravel overlain by limestone rubble, including worked stone and querns, covered by layers of silt derived from flooding of the ford to the south. No roadside ditches were observed.
It is thought that this road forms part of the road route HER Mon 6701/1.
