Full Description
{1} Documentary evidence for post medieval watermill and leat: "Water mills with dams and holms" listed in terrier as part of Upper Hall Manor demesne and mapped.
{2} History:
1086 Domesday survey records Stanere having one mill rendering 32d
1762 Thomas Osborn, miller
1780 William Osborn at Stannion Mill.
1841-98 Bell family were millers at Stanion
1910 Edgar Kington, last miller at Stanion found in a trade directory
1920 Mill described as disused
Documentary sources: 1791 Eyre and Jeffreys' map does not show it; 1821 OS survey map marks it mill; 1827 Bryant's map marks it mill, as does the 1835 1 inch map. The 1930 1 inch OS map does not show the mill.
The site visit of 10/08/2002 failed to identify any standing remains of the watermill, but suggested that there may be surviving remains below ground. The watercourse has been altered and the mill cleared away, but leaving remains of an extensive dwelling.
