Full Description

{1} The outbuildings are mid 19th century in date, built as part of an enclosure farm to provide an income to the incumbent of St Mary's Church. The buildings indicate the farm was originally mixed with a threshing barn and later became a pastoral farm with room for a significant number of animals before eventually being abandoned and used for poultry rearing. The presence of a rendered and painted carriage house and stable suggest that the farm was prosperous and of some status.

Building 'F' closes the easternmost end of the yard, unlike the previous buildings; its principal elevation is undoubtably facing the grange to the east, with its back to the yard. The southernmost bay has the outline remains of two stalls, there is also a single hayrack in the SW corner and thye walls are painted with lime mortar. Likely used for stabling horses for riding or for the carriage. The central bay is also rendered and painted and has a large carriage door on the eastern elevation; this bay was likely a carriage house for the grange, rather than a cart shed for the farm.

There is evidence that building 'E' was origainlly built as a threshing barn with large threshing doors on the north and south elevations, the southernmost door was later reduced in size, possibly when the farm began to concentrate on livestock, possibly to exploit the new railway which stopped at Oundle from the mid 19th century onwards.
