Full Description

{1} The building recording determined that the Old Barn was originally a 17th-century cruck-built threshing barn, contemporary with a number of structures in the close vicinity. It was re-roofed and provided with a timber threshing floor in the mid-19th century. The floor is supported on a brick sub-structure. There are wrought iron grilles near ground level which provide ventilation to the underside of the floor. On the western side of the threshing floor is a planked sill wall with fillets in the corners and the joints between the planks are covered. The one on the east has disappeared. In the north-east and south-east corners of the threshing floor there is some slight evidence for grain bins. On the south-east side of the southern threshing floor door are the remains of the threshing plank groove. During the 20th century, about half of its floor was reduced in level by about 300mm in order to accommodate wheeled access from the north.
To the east was a stable built integrally with the barn, but not included in this survey. With Pool Farm Barn to the west, converted pig sties, this barn was formerly part of Pool Farm.
