Full Description

{1} In the north-eastern corner of the site, a ditch was identified. Aligned east west, it was 10m long by at least 1m wide and 0.6m deep with a flat base. The lowermost 0.25m of the ditch had been cut vertically into solid limestone bedrock, the uppermost 0.35m had been cut at an acute angle through the rubbly surface of the limestone natural and the overlying subsoil. The ditch had a slightly curving terminal approximately 10m to the west of the eastern side of the excavation trench . The northern balk of the excavation trench was located above the possible centre line of the ditch alignment. It was therefore, not possible to record a complete profile of the ditch. The fill consisted of a dark yellow-brown sandy clay loam with numerous limestone fragment inclusions. Sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery were found within the fill.
