Monument record 563/0/3 - Middle to late Iron Age settlement, Stag Road

Archaeological investigation ahead of residential development identified an area of mid-late Iron Age settlement comprising roundhouses, boundary ditches and pits. This settlement is likely to be associated with the larger area to the west [HER 563].

{2} Isolated undated features were present particularly across the central area of site, and were mostly small ditches and gullies. The fills of which were often not dissimilar from the Iron Age activity to the west and some may represent outlying drainage and boundaries away from the main settlement area, accounting for the lack of finds.

{3} Archaeological excavation was undertaken between 2019 and 2021 ahead of residential development. In Excavation Area 3, located to the east of the main areas of excavastion, there was a domestic focus comprising roundhouses, boundary ditches and pits dating to the middle Iron Age. This domestic focus is probably associated with the larger area of settlement to the west.
