Summary

Geophysical survey found evidence for linear and curvilinear positive anomalies to the north of known cropmarks. Full Description

{1} Geophysical survey found evidence for linear and curvilinear positive anomalies to the north of known cropmarks. These are indicative of former cut features, and form a number of rectangular and circular enclosures.

{2} Trial trench excavation was undertaken on a plot of land to the east of Mill Lane. The main focus of Iron Age features, which comprised a possible roundhouse or encloure ditch, storage pit and cultivation trench/ditch, was located in the south to south-west corner of the site, adjacent to Mill Lane. The remains are likely to represent peripheral activity, related to the settlement core identified to the north-east by the geophysical survey.
The main focus of Roman features, possibly part of a wider field system, was located in the north-eastern part of the site. The remains are likely to represent peripheral activity, related to the settlement core identified to the north-east by the geophysical survey. Only small quantities of Iron Age and Roman pottery were found in association with the features.

{3} Trial trench excavation was undertaken on a plot of land to the east of the earlier investigation. Archaeological features were present in nearly every trench and were predominantly of late Iron Age date with a smaller number of features of both early Roman date and those later in the Roman period. The features largely comprised ditches, probably of enclosures and/or boundaries, and pits. A possible hollow way was also identified. A single Medieval gully was also revealed.
