Full Description

{1} The building is stone-built with a roof clad in Collyweston Slates, the West Street elevation has been largely re-built and the building re-roofed very recently, the date 2006 or 2009 can be seen inscribed into new mortar at eaves height on the southern gable. Although less apparent there is slight evidence that the north facing gable has also been re-built. There are a number of openings on both long elevations; however, it is unclear which are original and which are later.

Internally, there are two gable chimney stacks as well as a first floor over the northern and central bays. There are only fireplaces on the ground floor, suggesting it had a domestic origin. The original first floor consists of joists carried on two chamfered bridging beams, empty joist holes on the southern gable indicates the floor was originally the full length of the building. There is no evidence of stairs. There is evidence of a blocked opening towards the centre of the principal elevation, the opening appears to have an awkward relationship with the current first floor level. The opening is not visible externally due to the re-building, so it is difficult to establish its origins.

Both the fireplaces and the banding indicate that the building originated as domestic building, before being converted to non-domestic building, this occurred possibly as early as the 18th century.

This building formed part of a single range of buildings in the early 19th century with 35 and 37 West Street.
