Full Description

{1} The stable is located to the south of Shuckburgh House, the southernmost gable serves as the boundary wall. The building is built of red brick (brick dimensions - largely 8 ½ x 2 ¼ x 4inch, possibly handmade) under a corrugated asbestos cement sheet roof. The current layout is of 5 bays with four stable doors, three of which have flanking, glazed windows, under 20th century concrete heads. There is however a faint trace outline of a now blocked, wider opening at the northern end of the principal (east facing) elevation, such an arrangement was common on cowsheds, suggesting the stable may have originally been a cowshed. However, it is also possible that this blocked entrance may be a blocked carriage arch or cart shed. Further evidence of potential alterations are the vertical panels of inserted brickwork above each of the stable doors, again suggesting they are un-original. There is a further door on the west facing elevation. Towards the centre of the principal elevation, immediately below the eaves is a slate datestone bearing the date 1780 and the initials “GA”. It is almost certain the date stone is re-set as the surrounding brickwork is likely to be early 19th century in date. However it does support the Inclosure Map of c.1820 which records a building occupying the footprint of the current stable.
