Full Description

{1} An earlier alignment of Outlaw Lane is shown on the 1803 survey of the town. By the time of the First Edition Ordnance Survey, the lane had been re-aligned to its current location. Two parallel ditches observed in one of the trenches probably formed the roadside ditches of the former Outlaw Lane, mapped in 1803, but, on the evidence of the pottery, dating to some centuries before that. The lane probably acted as a green lane, providing access to the fields, and its dog-legging course related to an old field-layout which predated the 1803 Inclosure of the land. The ditches may have taken many

{2} Subsequent excavation of the area proved that one of the ditches was actually the edge of a large quarry pit. The other was thought to be the eastern roadside ditch of Outlaw Lane.
