Full Description

{1}Archaeological evaluation in January 2017 revealed activity across the eastern part of the proposed development in the form of several small ditches of Romano-British date oriented north-south or east-west. These likely represent component parts of field boundaries and/or land division. The heavily abraded character of the 2nd and 4th century pottery recovered from a number of these features suggests that these derived from manuring spreads rather than from on-site domestic occupation.

{2} A strip, map and sample excavation was focussed on the archaeological features identified in the earlier evaluation. The site appears to comprise a series of small enclosures with small gullies separating them. The majority of the pottery and animal bone was located within two short lengths of gully, which possibly related to a former building. The pottery mainly dates to the first half of the 2nd century and comprised local greywares, with a few sherds from further afield, including imported wares.
