Full Description

{1} Analysis, sketch plan, elevation and photographs.

A three bay one and a half storey cottage of coursed rubble stone under a 20th century tiled roof. A partially surviving cruck frame remains between the northernmost bays. The raised cruck has been encased by a later stone building and a roof structure has been constructed independently of the blades. The two bays appear to be independent of the third, forming a discrete cottage whose basic plan is familiar in the village. The hearth is delineated by a stone shield meeting the end of the firebeam, which is a replacement. There is a recess to the outer wall, which may have accommodated a bread oven and has been cut through and glazed. A second recess may have been a window, providing ventilation for the fire before the incorporation of the third bay.
The building was built up in stone and then floored over in the 16th century. The hearth was built, probably with a timber smoke hood which may still exist within the organically shaped stack.
The dating of the cruck frame is uncertain.
