Full Description

{1} Analysis, plan & photographs.

A building of coursed stone whose walls have been raised, under a 20th-century cement-tiled roof. A building of two bays faces the street. Behind this, the the north-east, a range of stone buildings follows the property boundary. The first of these abuts the house and is at a slightly higher level. The next, now a workshop building, occupies a very similar footprint to the house.

A cooking-hearth at the southern end of the cottage has a chamfered fire-beam with run-out stops. The spine beam is partially replaced, chamfered and with ogee stops. However, all the beams have been heavily cleaned and possibly reset. A small 19th century hearth has been inserted at the northern end. There is a blocked window between this room and the immediate extension. No access to the inside of the roof- the stack adopts a free flowing curvaceous form as it narrows towards the ceiling. It is possible that the line of the stack may represent an earlier roof line for this building.

A thatched roof is in situ beneath the modern roof. Access is available from the kitchen, although it was not inspected and the roof structure could not be established.

A foundation at least as early as the 17th century is expected.
