Full Description

{1} Analysis, plan & photographs.

A two-bay, two-storey building of stone faced with brick under a tiled roof facing the road. The bricks are small, 8.75"x2.25", and were probably locally produced in the 18th century. They are in Flemish bond with over-fired headers. Alterations have been made to the window openings and a central door-case is no longer in use. The gable end of the house is also faced in brick, with a single window in the attic. The rear of the building is of dressed coursed stone. The front two-bay range measures 7.3x3.7m internally. Behind this there is a further square unit, built in stone, and behind that, another measuring 6.5x3.7m, end on to the road, also in stone. These rear buildings are single storey and have been thoroughly modernised.

The hearth has a 19th or early 20th century iron range made by Roberts of Deanshanger set into what was an open hearth. The firebeam has a narrow chamfer with run-out stops. A bread oven occupies the space under the stais. The spine beam, with a slightly deeper chamfer, shows ogee stops partially buried in the plaster above the fireplace.

A recess found by the present owners on the first floor was cut on the inside as a window but never cut though; the stonework on the outside was continuous. This is now a window on the rear wall.
