Monument record 5812/1 - Possible Bronze Age barrow and prehistoric/Roman activity, east of Slade Farm

A circular enclosure ditch with multiple recuts. Further pits and ditches lay both within and outside the enclosure, some earlier.

{2} Trial trench excavation confirmed the results of the geophysical survey. A wide circular enclosure ditch, 27m in diameter, was, in fact, three to five intercutting ditches, the middle of which was widest and deepest at up to 4.6m wide and 1.33m deep. The nature of the fills suggest the ditches filled up naturally over time before being re-cut. The feature may be a Bronze Age round barrow, although the central burial is likely to be beneath the current field boundary. Possible barrow mound material was identified within the enclosure.

There were further ditches both inside and outside the enclosure, some of which were stratigraphically earlier. A single sherd of Roman pottery was recovered from one of the later ditches. One pit outside the enclosure contained calcined bone.
