Monument record 5515/2 - Probable Iron Age settlement, Marsh Spinney

A large D-shaped enclosure with internal divisions and possible structural features

{2} Trial trench excavation confirmed the extent of a D-shaped enclosure, 102m north-south, 93m east to west with an internal, east-west aligned, division. The southern enclosure ditch was 1.78m deep and 4.32m wide. The main fill appeared be the result of deliberate backfilling. There were four gullies aligned parallel to, and adjacent, the internal subdividing ditch. Difficult to interpret, but may be later forms of enclosure in the form of palisades or 'fences'.

A curvilinear gully in the southern part of the enclosure may be the remains of a roundhouse. Geophysical survey indicates further curvilinear features lay within the enclosure. A circular, flat-bottomed pit contained a large deposit of animal bone- still being assessed. Further, more sparsely concentrated ditches were also identified to the north of the enclosure. Initial dating of artefacts suggests that the enclosure and internal features may from the Iron Age.
