Full Description
[1} The stable range is contemporary with the eastern range and the smaller, isolated buildings at the south-west of the courtyard. These buildings all predate the farmhouse, whose construction was completed by 1848. The first depiction of the earlier buildings is on the 1810 Ordnance Survey drawing. In its earliest form the stable was fully stone-built and comprised four equal-sized rooms; it is unclear if the building was fully enclosed or partly open-fronted to the yard and whether it functioned as a stable at this time.
It is likely it was remodelled during the same period as the construction of the farmhouse. This included re-roofing and rebuilding the eastern elevation in brick. The internal space was sub-divided by the addition of several brick partitioning walls. It is probable that the three western bays were formerly larger rooms which were converted into smaller units.
{2} A further range of stables, constructed of coursed limestone rubble, was recorded on the south of the courtyard. The T-shaped stable range was found to have been constructed in two phases. The eastern range pre-dates the Farmhouse, likely dating to the early 19th century. A second phase, extending west and east, possibly dates to the wider phase of renovation works at the time of the construction of the Farmhouse in 1848. Further smaller rooms and other alterations subsequently took place including the addition of concrete troughs in the 20th century.
