Full Description

{1} Archaeological evaluation at Moat House revealed deep medieval soils in both of the two trenches, but which could not be further defined within their confines. Pottery suggested a 12th-century date. The remains of a limestone wall aligned north-east to south-west was also identified; a further test pit excavated to the south-west of the trench confirmed the continuation of this wall. To the south a possible demolition deposit suggested further walls may also be located nearby. A post-medieval tiled surface laid directly onto the topsoil was also identified.

{2} The watching brief, which was conducted during the groundworks for the extension, revealed the return wall of the wall which was identified in Trench 2 during the evaluation, with additional wall foundations. Also recorded was a dump of roughly hewn sandstone blocks, which appears to be related to the demolition rubble, noted in Trench 1 during the evaluation. A series of deposits were recorded beneath the wall and masonry deposits, one of which contained pottery of 11 th to 12th century date. There were no other finds recorded of a later date, and it was not possible to give a clear date of establishment of the walls, but cartographic evidence states that the buildings were in place by 1883.
