Summary

46 Broad Street is a two storeyed leather workers workshop or small shoe factory located to the rear of Nos. 42 and 44, a mirror-pair of houses fronting Broad Street to the north. The workshop is reached via a lane serving a yard behind, where a terrace of derelict one-up, one- down pre-1884 cottages survive. It has an L-plan, with elevations of five bays to the north and three to the east. A later toilet block has been demolished at the western end and a small engine-house in the re-entrant on the north side has also been demolished. Built in the late 19th/early 20th century, the output appears to have been childrens shoes.

Full Description

{1} Two-storeyed workshop or small factory located to the rear of No 42 and 44. It has an L-plan, with elevations of five bays to the north and three to the east. The windows have continuous timber lintels, chamfered blue brick sills and cast-iron frames. A later toilet block has been demolished at the western end and a small engine house has been demolished in the re-entrant on the south side. Children's shoes were made here. During the Second World War a grinder and lathe were installed and submarine parts were manufactured.

{2} Constructed in the period between 1885 and 1889. In 1929 the workshop was listed in Kelly’s Directory of the Shoe Trades as FJ Dunkley (children’s shoes).
